Court bid to halt logging at Sylvia Creek

ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), August 24, 2011

Environment groups are seeking a Supreme Court injunction against the logging of bushland near Sylvia Creek, near Toolangi.

The State Government-owned timber company, VicForests, has begun logging parts of the forest.

Opponents claim the area is home to the endangered Leadbeater's possum and must be protected.

VicForests disputes this.

Conservation lawyer Vanessa Blyer says her client's case is clear.

"The writ alleges that Leadbeaters possum habitat is being logged right now," she said.

"As a result, the logging is unlawful.

"And as a result, the court is asked to permanently restrain VicForests from logging near Leadbeaters possum habitat."
